The Communications and Marketing Specialist (Public Affairs/Communications Specialist III) should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.
The Communications and Marketing Specialist for the College of Health and Human Development (HHD) coordinates the communications and marketing strategies in support of the college's overall institutional goals. Under the general direction of the Dean, the Communications and Marketing Specialist is responsible for independent performance of the college's communications and marketing strategies and working with the Director of Development and HHD Research Grants Specialist to procure external funding. Responsible for the oversight and lead coordination of external and internal marketing efforts for the college, college media relations, community outreach, web communications, and publication functions. Oversees design and execution of the marketing plan and all HHD marketing materials to increase awareness of HHD programs within the community and across the university which includes discerning key communication points and soliciting input and feedback in accord with the college's mission and evaluating the value of the college's marketing and social media efforts. Responsible for overseeing the college's web marketing and social media strategy, developing and administering social media accounts to attract prospective friends of the college and to remain in touch with current HHD students and alumni. Communicates efforts by creating and delivering the appropriate media messages. Manages college news publications and maintains oversight of college website. Develops internal stories to be communicated to external constituencies. Ensures consistency of brand presentation across programs, as well as among departments, programs, research centers, and external constituency groups including alumni and campus administrators. Uses analytics to track the effectiveness of projects. Educates administrators, faculty, and staff regarding effective marketing practices. Serves as the dean's office liaison to other university departments, such as Strategic Communications, to ensure that university activities support the college's desired brand presentation. Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications: Bachelors degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field. Two years of related professional or technical experience. Knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, as well as some exposure to marketing and marketing research. Possession of strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles. Ability to develop themes and concepts and oversee the creation of content and communication materials. Comprehensive knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods. Ability to use market research to enhance the impact of communication strategies and campaigns. Working knowledge of appropriate use of statistical techniques. Possession of expert-level networking and interpersonal skills including strong consultative and persuasive skills to work with internal and external constituents and the media. Possession of expert writing and editorial skills, as well as demonstrated organizational skills. Proficiency in the use of general office equipment, Windows-based personal computers, and administrative computing systems including MS Office applications and other relevant software applications.
