The CALS Marketing and Communications Office promotes the groundbreaking scientific discoveries and internationally renowned expertise of our faculty and staff. The Office seeks an accomplished communications professional with a demonstrated record of success to serve as its Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications, NYSAES. We are looking for a highly-motivated and creative communicator – ideally with a background in science, health, agriculture or food-related communications – to help promote the work and activities of NYSAES to diverse audiences and gain authority for NYSAES within its areas of expertise.
The Marketing & Communications Senior Manager will report directly to the CALS Assistant Dean of Marketing & Communications with a dotted line report to the Associate Dean/Director of the NYSAES and will be primarily responsible for bringing greater visibility to NYSAES. After 135 years, the NY State Agricultural Experiment Station will soon adopt a new name, Cornell AgriTech at the NY State Agricultural Experiment Station. The incumbent, who will also act as a member of the NYSAES Leadership Team, will have primary responsibility for building a brand identity around Cornell AgriTech in cooperation with the NYSAES director, program leadership and other faculty and staff. This responsibility is critical to enhancing our ability to attract and maintain industry partnerships, enhance local and regional economic development, build engagement, elevate the reputation of our scientists, enhance personnel recruiting and retention, inspire donations, and increase funding support by elected officials in Albany and Washington D.C. Primary responsibilities include the following: Act as internal expert and consultant to NYSAES units in matters related to communications and public relations; develop and implement solutions to meet client communication needs to increase the impact of all NYSAES communication vehicles (website, printed and digital collateral) via production, selection and management of related content and continuous improvement and innovation of the user experience; establish an authentic and sustainable brand for Cornell AgriTech and engage members of the internal and external communities to help bring the brand to life; build local and regional community relations program in order to further elevate brand and NYSAES awareness; and manage related project budgets. Additional areas of responsibility include the following:
Designing and implementing communication strategies to connect the mission, goals, priorities, products, programs courses and accomplishments of NYSAES to the Cornell CALS and Cornell University brands as well as both internal and external audiences using various methods of print and/or electronic media; plan strategic communications.
Creating communications pieces including brochures, articles, newsletters, web-based communications, landing pages, social media updates and targeted interest pieces.
Managing the creation, production and distribution of NYSAES marketing/communications collateral for academic programs (web/landing pages, social media sites, direct mail, email, ads, and other distribution channels) from planning and budgeting, through design and printing, to public release. Work in collaboration with the college's Marketing andCommunications office to assure alignment and compliance with college standards and attend meetings in Ithaca as needed.
Developing and implementing demand generation marketing activities primarily to increase the number of ‘right-fit’ top prospective participants to select academic and outreach programs.
Oversee and ensure the integration of the brand promise, vision, and position into all forms of marketing and communications. Oversee strategic planning, execution and maintenance of effective communication efforts with units to reinforce and enhance brand awareness.
Collaborating with the NYSAES event coordinator and other staff regarding special events and VIP tours to provide high quality experiences for visitors as well as content for public displays representing NYSAES at external events.
Identifying and executing communitybuilding activitiesand related communications for NYSAES faculty, staff, students; representing NYSAES communications areas on relevant NYSAES and CALS-wide committees; maintaining email lists and managing emergency communications as needed.
Collaborating with NYSAES Senior Administrative Manager and the Administrative Service Center on financial, procurement and service areas. Ensure compliance with University and Station policies related to procurement.
Bachelor's degree in communications or related field, 5-7 years related experience creating and managing marketing and communications strategy including brand awareness, media relations, content strategy, database and list management, direct mail programs, email marketing and digital marketing. Experience creating content for the purpose of marketing is also required.
Ability to write and develop a variety of information materials such as science-related press releases, articles, background summaries, fact sheets, and feature stories. Skill in evaluating newsworthiness, messages, target audiences and dissemination strategies. Ability to remain current with media trends and changes in technology is essential. Ability to present ideas clearly and concisely and create enthusiasm among stakeholders. Experience with project management and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously. Positive outlook and attitude-someone who naturally builds good rapport with team members. Outgoing self-starter who meets deadlines and makes timely decisions on final products. Utility player who can step into multiple situations as needed and can effectively navigate stressful situations. Experience collaborating with cross-functional team members to ensure information is shared, projects are completed on time, and goals are reached. Must have solid understanding of social media space as it relates to communications.
Demonstrable proficiency in Microsoft Office products. Effective communication skills, both up and down the management chain. Strong mental acuity, creativity and curiosity. Ability to customize communications to audiences having different levels of comprehension, professional audiences or points of view. Adheres to journalistic standards for fact-finding, research, verification, and style. A passion for education, and a positive ‘can-do,’ spirit. Some travel may be required for face-to-face meetings or industry events, estimated to be 10% of time or less. Possession of a valid US passport without travel restrictions and a valid U.S. driver's license is required. Must have the flexibility to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs warrant.
A strong science background or work experience within a field of science or agriculture with a strong communications background. Experience interpreting complex scientific research results for diverse audiences of varying levels of scientific understanding; Experience managing, maintaining, and updating a public-facing website; Video production/editing, graphic design skills including familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud software, familiarity with AP writing style, and/or event organizing experience is a plus; Understanding how to implement integrated issue campaigns across channels including digital and print; Experience managing budgets and contractors; Experience advising and supporting C- level executives; experience authoring and executing advertising and outreach campaigns using a variety of platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube; Experience with market research and data analysis.
