The National Conference of State Legislatures is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and legislative staff of the nation's 50 states, its commonwealths and territories. NCSL provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues. The NCSL Communication Division seeks a marketing professional with competence in email marketing, digital marketing, writing, project management and event promotion. The position supports the Marketing Manager in coordinating and executing integrated marketing plans to promote NCSL meetings, events, services and policy deliverables such as reports, podcasts and webinars. Each year, NCSL conducts more than 100 meetings of varying sizes held across the country and produces a significant library of educational materials covering a range of policy topics targeting legislators and legislative staff.
This position will work in concert with the digital content team (website, blogs, podcast and magazine), the social media team and inhouse topic experts to coordinate and implement marketing activities. This responsibility will require the development of project timelines, effective communication of expectations, as well as follow up with tracking and reporting. In addition to supporting the coordination of marketing plans, this position will play a significant role in the actual implementation of email marketing activities including the trafficking/scheduling, writing, building, and optimizing email communications to our members and stakeholders. Looking for opportunities to increase effectiveness of email communications through study of analytics, best practices and A/B testing will be important.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Develops comprehensive timelines and project plans. Conducts appropriate follow up to ensure implementation.
Works with topic experts to develop and approve content.
Develops marketing materials for meetings, exhibitors and members and assists with on?site with promotional events.
Looks for additional opportunities to promote meetings and other content.
Oversees email marketing software including the organization of content and reporting.
Drafts email content utilizing conventions to increase content consumption.
Produces reports and reviews analytics to identify trends and areas for optimization.
Actively keeps up with changing trends and best practices for email marketing.
Handles overflow work, assists on special projects, and fills in for others as needed.
Helps coordinate graphics for emails and digital marketing efforts.
Basic understanding of branding and how to implement with discipline.
Serves as a communication resource for NCSL staff.
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers, copy machines, scanners and smartphones.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, lift small objects up to 50 lbs., open filing cabinets and bend, stoop, or stand on a stool as necessary. Requires the ability to travel locally, regionally and nationally, including overnight and weekends.

Experience and Education
Bachelor’s degree plus five years of relevant or progressive work experience in a marketing or communications role.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent writing, speaking, research, analytical, and organizational skills;
Knowledge of web design technology, multimedia capabilities and digital marketing strategies;
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite;
Experience with email marketing platforms (such as MailChimp, Constant Contact);
Experience with a CRM data management system (Salesforce a plus);
Familiarity with the latest trends, technologies in graphic design and web design;
Analytical skills to forecast and identify trends and challenges;
Ability to coordinate and execute efforts of a team;
Familiarity with NCSL's or related non?profit organization's goals and practices;
Strong ability to relate to and successfully service constituents;
Capacity and willingness to take on multiple and differing responsibilities;
Ability to work well under pressure, multi-task, and meet deadlines;
Sound judgement in communicating information in a neutral, non-partisan manner;
Video editing, photography experience, and graphic design skills highly preferred.
