Job Requisition Number: 27065. The School of Public Health (SPH) is a large and complex professional school at UC Berkeley, with a mission to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable, through interdisciplinary collaborations, preeminent education, and transformational research.
The School is comprised of six academic divisions and 30 research centers and programs, with over 200 faculty, 120 academic/research staff, 155 management/professional/ administrative staff, and 285 student researchers/instructors/workers. The School offers a core MPH degree with nine areas of study, along with five MA and MS degree programs, a DrPH and five PhD degree programs, and five concurrent programs with other UC Berkeley schools and colleges; in addition, the School offers a joint degree with UC San Francisco. The School launched UC Berkeley’s first on-line degree program in 2012 and is rapidly expanding the program to reach a wide range of domestic and international audiences through online degrees, certificate programs, and executive education. The School enrolls approximately 575 graduate students per year, as well as educating roughly 440 undergraduate students through an upper-division public health major. •Works with School leadership to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long- and short-term strategic communications plans and complex communications projects that can be large in scope and with long timelines, such as the production of a magazine, redesign of a website, support of a fundraising campaign, or publicity and messaging for a series of high profile events like the 75th Anniversary events.
•Delivers comprehensive communications programs, including written, visual, and electronic communications, for the School of Public Health. Produces and oversees the production of a variety of communication pieces in a variety of venues including written, visual, and electronic communications. Specifically these include the School’s monthly e-newsletter and other email communications, online features, profiles and testimonials, event materials, ongoing web and social media content, prospective student marketing brochures, and print magazines or annual reports.
•Manages and mentors a team of 3-4 communications professionals with diverse expertise, such as in content, design and production, web and digital management, and content marketing.
•Provides advice and counsel to School administration on all aspects of communications, including strategic planning, effective messaging, branding, and problem resolution. Occasional consultation and support in crisis and change communications.
•Ensures production of high quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints. Requires working closely with vendors such as designers, printers, photographers, web developers, and writers.
•Identifies specific communications needs and develops the content and process for organizational improvements. For example, implementing social media management tools or developing toolkits and intake forms for stakeholders around the School.
•Works with School and campus leaders to build a School of Public Health brand that aligns with the larger Berkeley brand and creates tools for positioning the School strategically with the its audiences and stakeholders.•Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long- and short-term strategic communication plans and advanced skills in communications project management. •Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications. •Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to direct professional technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including content strategy, writing, and editing; website and other digital media; design concepts and execution; social media; content marketing, and other applications. •Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information. •Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills. •Excellent analytical and critical thinking, project management skills, and problem resolution ability, as well as experience with people management and development. •Advanced knowledge of UC Berkeley and its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure, or the ability to learn. •Advanced knowledge of the School of Public Health, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure, or the ability to learn. •Thorough knowledge of campus protocols and channels for communication internally and externally, or the ability to learn.
Education/Training: •Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
