BU's award-winning Marketing & Communications team is looking to add a savvy public relations leader and strategic thinker with robust media contacts, a passion for integrated campaigns and strong interest in science and research promotion.
The Associate Director, Public Relations will develop and lead the execution of strategic public relations campaigns across traditional and digital media, targeting key outlets and influencers, to promote Boston University research, science, discoveries, and faculty expertise. The role will proactively identify stories and experts throughout the University for promotional opportunities as well as counsel, plan and carry out efforts for research promotion brought forth from campus researchers and stakeholders. The role will also lead BU's Strategic Communications Series, in partnership with the Office of Research, that offers best practices to BU faculty and staff for communicating science and research in effective, compelling, and accessible ways. Additionally, this position will guide and counsel colleagues on promotional best practices via documentation, presentations and one-on-one consultation sessions.
The Associate Director of Public Relations will collaborate across multiple teams, including the Office of Research, Federal Relations, Marketing and Communications and BU's Schools and Colleges.
The ideal candidate has a proven track record of successfully working with the media, prioritizing projects that align with strategic areas of importance and developing promotional plans with specific goals and measurable results. Additionally, they will possess excellent written and oral communication skills, finesse at engaging leadership and stakeholders, and the ability to critically evaluate information, assessing news value and strategic importance.
B.A./B.S. or equivalent in communications, marketing, journalism or related field(s). Experience working with the media, successfully pitching and securing stories and op-ed placements.
Five to eight years' experience in leadership role, including performing independent work, leading projects and supervising staff. Background in higher education, science and/or research communication, or agency setting. Superior attention to detail. Able to work with principal stakeholders and clients and to work collaboratively with team members and other departments. Experience working with professors, researchers and scientists a plus. Able to describe science concepts to a consumer or lay audience. Experience in integrated traditional and social media public relations campaigns and with data and presentations to extract actionable insights.
