The Communications Specialist will be responsible for carrying out the C-FARM projects communications strategy, coordinating and developing materials and resources that will amplify the impact of the C-FARM project and the commitment of project stakeholders and donors, highlighting the importance and role of soil health in climate mitigation and food security. This individual will create visually appealing and informative materials themselves by coordinating the input of a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders that can add value to the projects communications materials utilizing a variety of digital software tools. Proposed audiences include stakeholders of the Lal Carbon Center, those closely involved with the Project (Co-PIs, advisory board, sponsoring organizations, and other stakeholders), scientists in soil and other agronomic fields, farmers, land managers, and extension agents, policymakers, and those in the public with an interest in food security and environmental issues (activists, gardeners, etc.). This role will manage the Lal Carbon Centers external communications in collaboration with the Centers director and staff, university & CFAES marketing and development, the Office of Sponsored Programs, and other entities across the university. This role will also manage the planning and execution of the Centers in-person events, in collaboration with OSU development, and partners internal and external to OSU. Specifically, the Center will host the annual C-FARM conference, as well as an annual fundraising event in support of the Centers endowment. This role will also be tasked with scheduling and coordinating the external advisory board meetings of C-FARM and the Lal Carbon Center.
Our communications strategy will potentially include the following activities:
Quarterly Lal Carbon Center newsletter.
Quarterly C-FARM podcast featuring in-depth discussion of C-FARM progress with partners and stakeholders.
Quarterly focused webinar/seminar series presenting C-FARM project achievements and progress.
Plan and execute the annual C-FARM meeting in partnership with Lal Carbon Center staff, project collaborators and stakeholders, and university development.
Plan and execute four annual meetings of the Lal Carbon Center external advisory board and two annual meetings of the C-FARM external advisory board.
Email communication with internal and external stakeholders and collaborators.
Regular meetings with OSU development to coordinate donor engagement.
Creating and managing social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) weekly/monthly as needed.
Biweekly (every two weeks) shorter news updates highlighting progress of C-FARM and related news items that feature the importance of role soil health in climate mitigation and food security.
Project webpage updates and redesign as needed in accordance with OSU brand identity and web guidelines.
Event materials including invites, webpages, and registration pages as needed.
Project fact sheets for farmers, land managers, extension agents, and donors.
Archive, label and organize C-FARM and Lal Carbon Center materials (photographs, presentations, videos) in accordance with OSU guidelines.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience and 0-2 years of relevant experience.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Drupal, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Rush, After Effects, and Express.
Knowledge of social media and web communication best practices within OSU guidelines.
Knowledge of OSU brand identity guidelines.
Two years of professional experience in external communications
Exchanges information on routine and non-routine matters
Worked on projects of moderate scope and complexity.
Desired Qualifications
Experience working within a higher education setting.
2-4 years of relevant experience.
This is a part-time, hybrid eligible, Term position.
