Both disciplines provide the opportunity and means for addressing major scientific and technological challenges, such as climate change, increasing the world's food supply, synthesizing new materials, and discovering and delivering important drugs. The College Relations and Development team within the College of Chemistry is responsible for supporting the research and educational priorities through private philanthropic support and bespoke engagement opportunities.

Responsibilities
General Responsibilities:
Direct the development of an overarching audience growth and development strategy to grow and sustain the College's internal and external stakeholders.
Oversee the development of engaging and informative content on owned channels, with a focus on social media and newsletters, and working closely with the Senior Assistant Dean and other Communications and Marketing team members to identify priority messaging.
Monitor, analyze, and share analytics and data to advise the broader College Relations and Development team and colleagues across the College on optimal audience development and engagement strategies.
Proactively share out audience development insights and best practices to key stakeholders.
Build an organizational brand and create tools for positioning the organization strategically as the #1 publicly funded college of chemistry in the nation.
Audience Growth, Content and Marketing Strategy, and Execution:
Direct the development of engaging digital content to grow and sustain the college's main audiences: current and prospective students, faculty, staff, media, affiliated and unaffiliated friends, advocates, sponsors, partners and supporters of the college and the chemical sciences overall.
Establish and articulate a distinct voice and tone for the College of Chemistry's primary social media accounts and ensure that content on these channels reflects the College's key messages.
Develop and sustain vendor relationships and strategic partnerships related to audience growth, marketing, and content distribution.
Report on results of these partnerships and offer recommendations for refining our approach or determining if partnerships should be discontinued.
Manage RFP, procurement, and contract processes as needed.
Identify and pursue influencer and brand ambassador opportunities in order to further overall audience development goals.
Implement plans and workflows for social listening and community management with backup coverage.
Identify opportunities for international social media outreach and marketing.
Provide oversight of the Dean's social media strategy, and occasionally identify high-impact opportunities for the Dean on social media and in relation to audience growth and marketing goals.
Management and Administration:
Guide the college's senior leadership with strategic advice and support related to our college's branding, marketing, and communications, including interviewing faculty to report on their research, awards, and historic breakthroughs.
Coordinate with communications leaders throughout the University and its divisions on high-level digital communications opportunities as appropriate.
Serve as the point of contact for the College of Chemistry to UC Berkeley's University Communications, Public Affairs, the communications teams at Berkeley Lab and University Development & Alumni Relations (UDAR).
Regularly contracts on and off campus designers, printers, writers, videographers, and photographers for projects.
Manage one full-time Web Manager and oversee one student worker, including their recruitment, retention, coaching, mentoring, approving annual work goals, and addressing performance issues and conducting annual performance reviews.
Review and collaborate on their work.
Offer proactive recommendations to achieve workflow and quality improvements.
Analytics and Knowledge Sharing:
Develop contextualized reports with actionable insights informing internal audiences on best practices for web, social, and other communications.
Serve as industry expert on emerging trends and engagement strategies in social media, search, and other digital communications.
Evaluate available technologies and processes to streamline, improve, and otherwise refine the College's communications and marketing efforts.
Direct the college websites overall SEO strategy.
Required Qualifications
Five to ten years' experience in marketing or communications roles and demonstrated reliability in a communications environment.
Demonstrated ability to coach direct reports, and recruit new staff.
Knowledge of digital marketing platforms, i.e., Google Ads, Facebook Ads.
Experience managing marketing budgets, vendor identification workflows, and RFP processes.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated versatility in writing styles, including social media posts, short pieces for the web, and marketing copy.
An eye for design, and strong skills within design software, i.e., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, etc.
Creativity and proven record of developing engaging content from pitch to post.
Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Communications, English, or related field and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Proven experience developing engaging content within the field of higher education, tech, science, or journalism generally, and/or chemical sciences specifically.
Strong familiarity with basic science concepts and/or best practices in higher education marketing.
Past work in video production and/or web design.
Early adopter of new media, social trends, and technology.
Desire to lead, coach, and elevate a team and its work.
Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long and short-term strategic communication plans.
Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening, and political acumen skills.
Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills.
Must possess technical writing abilities to synthesize complicated scientific research into approachable feature stories for our alumni and donors, an ability to interview and develop stories about faculty, students, alumni, and donors.
Possess the ability to manage marketing and communication needs across all mediums -- print, email, web, social media, video, etc.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $95,300.00 - $140,000.00.
This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
This position is exempt and paid monthly.
